Operating system of a computer is a software based platform that all other types of software need it to run.

Operating system of a computer does several and very important tasks including, but not limited to:

• Enabling programs installed on a computer system to run
• Starting up and shutting down of computers
• Maintenance tasks like keeping a computer system healthy to enable it work properly and at an acceptable speed and efficiency
• Enabling a computer system to interact with input and output devices properly
