A full-featured antivirus software can delete or quarantine malwares after finding and provides resident guard preventing unwanted computer programs from being installed on a computer.

Some antivirus programs are able to detect spywares, though spywares are not classified as virus.

Antivirus programs should be updated regularly to provide best protection.
